The comment "ensure that the healthcare professionals and family doctors are aware of this" is funny (sarcastically)to me..
My dad is the main caregiver to my mom who had a stroke a little over 2 years ago.. i help a few times a week with getting her pills sorted out for him and groceries etc. dr's appointment, bill payment.. but because he did so little in there life before her stoke he is having a hard time just dealing with having to cook for himself.. he is now at the point where is doesn't leave the house with her (my mom) unless its for an appointment for her they have to go to. they lie on the couch all day and do nothing.. he is now moping around the place and gets angry at me for the smallest things.. i try my best to help as much as i can but i live an hour away and work 40hrs a week.. i've tried to call his doctors office for help since he refuses now to let me make him a yearly dr's appointment for a check up.. i needed their help i think he is very depressed, he wont listen to anything i say to try to help (i am his youngest daughter lol what do i know!) The reception at his dr's office wouldn't allow me to ever speak to his dr to tell him his struggles, to let him know he is a caregiver and is in need of help (mentally) and is struggling getting out of this cloud he doesn't even realize he is in.. i was told.. I cant talk to the dr or he will have to tell my dad i was calling about him and his depression.. and even then.. My dad had to ask for help for depression.. RIGHT! because every MAN asks for help.. and everyone knows there depressed.. i asked if there is some sort of procedure for doctors when there patient becomes a caregivers eg.. ask how there holding up etc.. answer to me was NO.. awesome thanks for all your help!!! left the phone call for help feeling even more helpless then before!! in Ontario from what i can find there is NO help.. Unless we all live in the same town.. and EVERYONE has to ask for it.. now i just get to watch my dad get more and more miserable everyday.. And i have no idea what to do.

Thank you, Cathy. That's good advice. I think we did all the right things, and the truth is, regardless of how prepared and strong we think we are, well, we aren't. bart

I wasn't "prepared" either when my father went into Palliative care. I couldn't understand why he kept losing roommates so quickly (I was in shock at the time obviously). With increased doses of morphine, he would become paranoid, hallucinating and finally comatose. The number one thing was to get as many family and friends in to visit him to say goodbye (at separate times) and express their thanks in meeting his kind soul. As to you, my friend, this is the most difficult part of your journey. There is no preparation...talk about the past memories alot...the good memories and to let it be known there are now worries and you'll look after everything. I wish I could contribute further...it's a very difficult time.

By the way - everyone who is passionate about how their loved ones are treated when in the care of a long term care facility should go to this link ... it made me cry.

I have recently re-started my fight to regulate senior home care in Toronto. This is for many reasons.

If there was a regulatory body – then there would be a central place for questions to be answered.

I have never understood why there isn’t. Aren’t these the toughest times of our lives? There are central places to get other questions answered – why not this?

If you are passionate about this – please sign my petition. We can all help together. http://www.gopetition.com/petition/30982.html
